Strengthening public health laboratory services

Public Health Laboratories are a cornerstone of health emergencies alert and response mechanisms. They provide the data required to detect, confirm and monitor epidemic and pandemic events.

WHO strengthens public health laboratory systems throughout the health emergencies preparedness, readiness response and recovery cycle by targeting:

  • National Laboratory systems, at the policy, governance and regulatory level,
  • Public health laboratory institutions and networks, and
  • Public health laboratory workforce

WHO develops and supports implementation of global initiatives, guidance documents and tools, manuals, and learning programmes, with a focus on resource-limited and vulnerable countries facing recurrent or imminent threats.
