Global Cooperation on Assistive Technology (GATE)

About us

The Global Cooperation on Assistive Technology (GATE) is a World Health Organization (WHO) initiative, drawing together people who share the GATE vision: a world where assistive technology is universally accessible to everyone, everywhere.

The GATE Community has over 2,500 members from 135 countries, including assistive technology users, policy makers, service providers, donors, educators, advocates, manufacturers and researchers. The diversity of membership is a strength, providing rich discussion and helping to generate strong solutions to difficult challenges.

The WHO-GATE 5P framework

GATE activities are organized around the WHO-GATE 5P framework for strengthening access to assistive technology which includes: People, Policy, Products, service Provision and Personnel.

To achieve universal, equitable access to assistive technology, actions are required in each area of the 5P framework. This means for example, ensuring a person-centred approach to reviewing and strengthening policy frameworks, addressing the need for affordable, quality products and a reliable supply chain, creating effective and accessible service provision models, and building the capacity of the workforce to support those who need assistive technology in their access.

How does GATE work?

GATE facilitates global assistive technology knowledge exchange, networking and actions in order to promote and build access to assistive technology. GATE members interact with each other and with the WHO GATE Secretariat, contributing to dialogue on specific areas of interest, as well as sharing information, expertise, successes and challenges from their work and/or experience of using assistive technology.

GATE members may also contribute directly to WHO led activities through specific GATE networks and other mechanisms. Most importantly, GATE is a platform to amplify and celebrate progress in increasing effective access to assistive technology for everyone, everywhere.

Who can join GATE?

Any person who supports the GATE vision and mission can join GATE. Members receive a quarterly newsletter update, and have access to a communications platform where they can engage with other members of the community.

GATE Networks

Within the GATE community are networks with a specific focus or area of interest. These networks are formed as needed, and may operate for a fixed period or be ongoing. Each network will have its own terms of reference including how the membership is formed. There is currently one active GATE Network – the Global Network on Measuring Access to Assistive Technology – with others under discussion.

Members interested in joining or initiating a GATE Network are encouraged to contact the GATE Secretariat: [email protected]
